Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene Comparison

Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene Comparison

One of the most famous scene in the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet is the “balcony scene” which occurred in (2.2.1-205). This scene takes place in Capulet’s garden where Romeo stares at Juliet while she is on her balcony confessing her love for Romeo. After he reveals himself to Juliet they share their devotion to each other they share a passionate kiss. After the nurse calls out for Juliet she says goodnight to Romeo and Romeo is on his way. Today I’m comparing the balcony scene for two different Romeo and Juliet movies. One is the 1968 version which starred Leonard Whiting as Romeo and Olivia Hussey as Juliet and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (which I have talked about in a previous blog) and the 1996 version which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes and was directed by Baz Luhrmann.

1968 Version of Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene

The most significant difference between the 1968 version and the 1996 version is the setting of the balcony scene. The setting of the 1968 version more resembles the play because it take place in Verona Italy, in the 1300’s. Furthermore, the balcony scene was in the Capulet’s garden where there was a balcony high up with a long walk way. On other hand, in the 1996 version takes place in Verona Beach in modern day since there was technology that did not exist in the 14th century like elevators, security cameras, and a pool. Rather than in the 1968 version where Romeo was quieter when approaching Juliet, the 1996 version Romeo was clumsy   and reckless (I’m also surprised he didn’t get caught).

1996 version of Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene

The way both Romeo and Juliet were positioned was completely different in both movies. In the 1968 version Romeo was hiding in the bushes of the Capulet’s garden and Juliet was moving around waving her arms. After Juliet discovers Romeo he climbs up the tree and they share a few passionate kisses. Then the nurse calls out for Juliet Romeo climbs up the tree a second time to give Juliet one last kiss and them both take their leave. In the 1996 version Romeo attempting to sneak around the Capulet mansion to see Juliet but he make several mistakes. Instead of a balcony in this movie Juliet goes down an elevator and is at her pool. Then Romeo sneaks up behind her and startles her causing them to fall in her pool. They talk for a bit but, as Romeo moves forward Juliet moves backwards. Then they share a kiss that compared to the 1968 version was bland. Finally they exchange some more sentences and they both leave.

Juliet’s Concerns for Romeo

Similarly, in both movies Juliet worries that Romeo will get caught and as a result he will be killed. In the 1968 version Juliet warned Romeo if he were to get caught her kinsman will kill him. Romeo didn’t care what happened to him making him seem very relaxed. In the 1996 version they were in a constant fear of being caught since there was a security camera at the pool and a security guard watching all cameras 24/7. He was almost caught at one point but he held his breath underwater and evaded the guard.

In conclusion, both versions of Romeo and Juliet portrayed the balcony scene in two different ways. If I had to pick a favourite it would probably be the 1968 version because it resembles the original play written by Shakespeare a lot more than the 1996 version and it better represented the whole idea of the balcony scene compared to the 1996 version. The 1996 version balcony scene had too many unnecessary moments such as, Romeo entrance being clumsy and made a significant amount of noise. Overall, Zeffirelli did a better job of portraying the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet than Luhrmann did.

I found that Susan Wloszczyna’s criticism of the balcony scene on the 2013 version of Romeo and Juliet was a little harsh. She claimed that its “the movies greatest disappointment,” and i don’t agree with most of what she said.I believe the acting was well done the music fit the scene, and the setting was beautiful. I was appalled when she said “if you can’t do the balcony scene right, then why even do Romeo and Juliet.” She basically said that the balcony scene is the biggest and the most important part of the play and the other scenes are unnecessary which i certainly don’t agree with at all. There are other scenes and parts that are just as important as the balcony scene like the Queen Mab speech, Romeo and Juliet’s first encounter, and the thumb biting incident. The only thing about Wloszczyna’s article i agree with was the positioning. The positioning was sloppy and did not fit with what the scene intended to be in the play. Comparing the 2013 to the 1996 the 1996 version was a lot worse. The acting was dull, the setting was irrelevant and the music was atrocious. In the end the 2013 version balcony scene was done well with some minor flaws.

The Jiblog Post

The Jiblog Post

There are a variety of news stories on the internet that interested me when I researching news stories through sports, technology, music, and many more. This story I heard in Business class  today really interested me and I wanted to learn more about it and share it on my blog.

Barcelona school killing

Students, believed to be from the same classroom where a teacher was killed, leave the school

A 13 year old boy in Barcelona Spain, killed a substitute teacher and wounded 4 other students at his high school. The boy was armed with both a crossbow and a machete. He was taken into custody by police soon after the attack and they did not release the name of the boy. The police of Barcelona said that the boy had no motive for murder.

Joe Miguel Company, spokesman for the Barcelona prosecutor’s office quoted, “He was very disturbed and saying strange incoherent things.”

Those who were injured by the boy were expected to survive. But, criminal charges cannot be filed against the boy since he is under 14 (Under Spanish law, criminal charges cannot be filed against a suspect under the age of 14). But, he will be evaluated by both a judge and a mental health profession so he will either be sent to a mental hospital or juvenile detention hall.

This story raised a lot of questions for me I’m going to list the 2 big ones I had,

  • How did nobody at the school notice he had such dangerous weapons at his possession?
  • Will the school increase it security and make any major changes to protect the students and teachers?

My overall opinion of this story is that the boy should be sent to a mental hospital because no sane person would commit those sort of actions. Also the Spanish government should consider laws of accessing fire arms like a crossbow. I also think the person who provided the boy with the weapon was extremely careless and should change his or her policy on selling weapons.

I want you guys to tell me your opinion on the story and address any facts or questions that you want to tell me that relates to this post.

Romeo and Juliet POV Diary: Romeo

Romeo and Juliet POV Diary: Romeo

Wednesday, June 3rd, 1303

I had never been this deeply in love with a women like Juliet in the entire time I walked on this earth. Her face resembles an angle who fell from the highest part of the heavens. Her beauty overwhelms the most beautiful goddess in legends. I had the greatest honor of seeing her face tonight. As I climbed up the tree and got up the balcony our eyes meet and we sealed everything with a passionate kiss.

We are going to get married tomorrow and i’m filled with both excitement and joy as the women I love will become mine in holy matrimony. This will become the most wonderful day in my life. Oh i wish I could share it with both Mother and Father but alas, she is a capulet my sworn mortal enemy.

But, they can kill me before I ever give up on my sweet Juliet. The wedding is tomorrow so I should get some sleep. At daybreak tomorrow my sweet Juliet and I will be together forever.

Romeo and Juliet Movie comparisons (1968 and 2013 Versions)

Romeo and Juliet Movie comparisons (1968 and 2013 Versions)

This is a comparison of two different versions of Romeo and Juliet films. The first is the 1968 version Romeo and Juliet which was directed and co-written by Franco Zeffirelli and starred Leonard Whiting (Romeo) and Olivia Hussey (Juliet). It was known for being the most financially successful film adaptation of a Shakespeare play during the time it was made. While the 2013 version of Romeo and Juliet which was directed by Carlo Carlei and starred Douglas Booth (Romeo) and Hailee Steinfield (Juliet). This film has led to controversy by some critics because this film only follows the plot and only uses some of Shakespeare’s traditional language.

  • Most of the prologue of the play was said by the narrator
  • The setting of Verona is just a giant castle covering a small village. Its completely different than what I imagined it to be
  • The thumbing bite insult by Sampson was used from the play and the fight scene was extremely over the top with the Capulet, Montagues, and the citizens of Verona participating so it was more like a riot than a fight
  • Some lines in the play are skipped and the lines that were said were exactly from the play
  • When Romeo is first introduced he is telling Benvolio about his love but he does not use Rosaline’s name
  • Benvolio appears more older and wiser than I imagine him to be in the play
  • Juliet looks a lot younger than I imagined in this film (even though the person playing her was 18 at the time)
  • The nurse claims she has 4 teeth yet she has all of them
  • The Queen Mab speech was a bit strange and Mercutio was portrayed as being insane but in the play I imagine him to be a knowledgeable and sophisticated person since he is the princes kinsman
  • Romeo is first portrayed as shy but during the party he looked very creepy by hiding in the corners and behind other people just to gaze at Juliet
  • The kiss between Romeo and Juliet was quick but had more passion
  • The music in the film was very loud and unnecessary
  • The clothes were bizarre and unusual
  • The dancing in the party was weird because the guest were holding their arms up and shaking their wrists
  • Some of the scenes were skipped in the movie but most of Act 1 is there
  • When Tybalt sees Romeo at the party Capulet doesn’t want to cause a scene for unknown reasons

  • The narrator only read the first four lines of the prologue than he talks about a jousting match
  • The setting of Verona for this movie is exactly what I imagined it to be
  • The fight scene was more like the play and all characters were present but the thumb biting incident was not included
  • Romeo looks older in this film and he is a lot more confident. Also he is a sculptor
  • Benvolio looks a lot younger in this film approximately 3-5 years younger than Romeo and he looks wimpy
  • Juliet looks older and more mature and she looks exactly like I imagined her
  • The nurse still has all her teeth
  • The setting of the party looked more clean and elegant
  • The costume design for this film is alto more simple and normal
  • Benvolio tries his chance at Rosaline after Romeo falls for Juliet
  • The kiss for this movie is quite long
  • The movie is very quick and Act 1 takes about less than half hour
  • Tybalt is in love with Juliet
  • The dancing is simple and elegant and matches the scene for the party
  • Juliet and Paris dance together at the party and Romeo steps in to dance with Juliet much to Paris is liking and it never happened in the play
  • Capulet didn’t want to cause a scene after Tybalt seen Romeo at the party ( it wasn’t explained how Tybalt saw Romeo) because he didn’t want to face severe punishment by the prince

My Opinion

If I had to pick my favourite between the two I would have to favour the 2013 version over the 1968 version for many reasons. Most people would say the 1968 version is better because it better resemble the play written by Shakespeare, but for me that’s the reason why I don’t like it. The 1968 version does tell the story of Romeo and Juliet well on paper but the movie itself has a lot of flaws. First of all the acting is bad, the music is too loud and unnecessary, the costumes look outrageous, the setting looks like a dump, and the movie is too bland and boring because it’s exactly like the play. Think about like this why you would go to a movie if you know exactly what’s going to happen at each scene. In the 2013 version there are better characters, the costumes are better, the setting looks nicer, the music is good, and the movie is exciting because there are different scenes. Also the 2013 version is more understandable for those who have haven’t read the play and more appealing for those who have. I find the 2013 version would also encourage younger children to read the play too.

Prince’s Army Seeks Information on Wandering Weeper Revised On (4/13/2015)

Romeo Montague Wanders across Verona in Sorrow

Written by: Najib Hersi

Leonardo Giovanni’s painting The Wandering Weeper

In Verona Italy, on June, 23rd, 1350, at around 7:30am-7:45am. Romeo Montague, son of lord Montague, aka the Wandering Weeper was seen roaming the streets of Verona in a sorrow state heading towards the forests near Verona

Several eyewitnesses saw Romeo wandering the streets in the early hours of the morning making strange sobbing noises avoiding any communication with anyone that approaches him

Romeo’s sobbing noises have frightened the citizens of Verona at the point where many are to scared to leave their homes. To stop the crisis Prince Escalus, the prince of Verona had sent his royal guard to investigate the whereabouts of Romeo and to get to the bottom of the issue.

Montague, the head of the Montagues was asked about his concerns about Romeo he replied with, “Many a morning hath he there been seen, with tears augmenting the fresh morning’s dew, adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs. But all so soon as the all-cheering sun Should in the farthest east begin to draw The shady curtains from Aurora’s bed, Away from light steals home my heavy son,” (1.1.134-140).

Benvolio, the Kinsman to the Montagues said “Towards him I made but he was ware of me and stole into the convent of the forest” (1.1.125-126)

Leonardo Giovanni, a local painter was so inspired by Romeo’s story that he painted a portrait of Romeo’s shadow heading deeper towards the forest (the picture above) which he named the painting the Wandering Weeper.

The Montagues have sent out a reward of 179 florins for anyone who finds Romeo and discovers why he is sad. Anyone who finds Romeo must contact Mercutio, the Prince’s Kinsman or Abram,  the Montague’s servingman to receive the reward

a) I consider my greatest strength as a writer is my creativity because I have been able to create very interesting and exciting stories and myths in my past english classes. My greatest weakness would be my editing skills because when I complete a writing assignment I have a habit of not editing my work properly so as a result there are plenty of grammar mistakes.

b) My approach of proofreading my work was to change the news story completely since my last copy had no relation to the play. Now my news report relates to the play, I have used references from the play, and instead of of my whole painting idea being the main focus of the news report i made it more of a side thing.

c) The hardest suggestion to implement while revising my work was making a new  subheading. This was difficult because since I had to make my news report more related to the play I couldn’t use a subheading that would turn my news report into a short story.

d) To ensure that I submit the most polished piece of work for evaluation is to edit my work more frequently. By doing this it would be easier for me to fix any big mistakes I have made and I receive the best mark possible.

The Power of Love

The Power of Love

The true meaning of love is the deepest form of affection you can get for another person. You are at the point where can’t last seconds without seeing the person you are in love with. True love is a big influence on others for example in Romeo and Juliet Romeo said,

“But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. Be not her maid, since she is envious Her vestal livery is but sick and green And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. It is my lady, O, it is my love! Oh, that she knew she were!” (2.2.4-11)

When people think of love at first sight you believe it’s the best thing that ever happened to them. People who believe in love at first sight are those hopeless romantics who watch too many romance movies and read too many romance novels. Love at first sight is a total sham for many reasons. First of all, why would you fall in love with someone only after seeing them once unless you have some sort of attraction to them which could end with the other person finding you creepy? You fall in love with someone by spending time with them and getting to know that person at the point where you both are inseparable. So for all those who believe love at first sight there is a difference between fantasy and real life.

I prefer “The Power of Love” By Huey Lewis over the one sung by Celine Dion for several reasons. With Celine Dion’s version I personally didn’t like some of the wording for her lyrics because I found them to be too unnecessary for the song for example,

“We’re heading for something somewhere I’ve never been Sometimes I am frightened But I’m ready to learn of the power of love”

I found these lyrics to be too fearful towards love and love is supposed to be this great obstacle you have to overcome but it seems completely bogus to me. But with“The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis he portrays love to be happy, sad, curious, and many more emotions. I also loved how he put all of those emotions into one song and with a catchy tune (If you want to see it for yourself the video is above the post). With Romeo and Juliet it isn’t just this sad love story. There is elements to the play that show several emotions felt when two people are in love and how they react to those emotions as a result. So as a whole the version on “The Power of Love” By Huey Lewis better represents how we view the topic of love and in the play Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo’s Everlasting Sorrow

Romeo’s Everlasting Sorrow

“Character Impressions:  Romeo.” Ms. Sockett’s English Courses. 24 Apr. 2013. Web. 2 Apr. 2015.

Oh I face an everlasting sorrow that hurts the depth of my soul. My love, her beauty rivals a goddess, a sunset, stars in the night sky, and perhaps life itself does not know I exist. I am sad that she does not know my name, my face, and how much I love and adore her. I am sad that I do not know anything about the girl I love, what she likes, dislikes, her ambition, desires, and dreams. Without a women like her in the world the true meaning of beauty is lost. I am sick because I don’t know the true meaning of love, I am sick because she does not know me and I don’t know her. If she were to die I will not have a reason to walk, speak, eat, drink, and even breathe. Before I get the chance to love her more than I do now is one simple thing, she has feel the same way

#1 Console of 2015 The WII U !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Image of the Wii U and Gamepad controller from

I purchased my Wii U on July 20th 2014, I was very satisfied with all the things the Wii U had through equipment, game titles, and other features. Sadly I’m very disappointed when I hear people bad mouth the Wii U because the Wii U doesn’t have good enough specs compared to the PS4 and Xbox One and other reasons. But I’m a guy who doesn’t really care much for Ram, CPU, GPU, and all those other specs. As a gamer I care about the experience you receive from playing certain games and remarkable characters that could be relatable or just something out of this world. Also, let’s be honest here the Wii U is clearly better than the PS4 and Xbox One in more ways you can imagine.

First of all, the Wii U is cheaper than the PS4 and Xbox One with the PS4 and Xbox One being about $399.99 while the Wii U is $349.99 which is about a $50.00 difference. The Wii U also comes with two games instead of one with their amazing bundles like the Deluxe Edition with the Wii U set with 32 GB internal memory and
Black Wii U Hardware (Includes Nintendo Land video game) . But speaking of price though one of the biggest pet peeves I have with the PS4 and Xbox One is that you have to pay for online. I believe paying for the game is enough but when you have to play online that’s where I draw the line. The price for both of them per year is pretty ridiculous in my opinion with the Xbox One Live Gold being $59.99 per year and PlayStation plus being $49.99 per year. The Wii U is the only one of the three next generation consoles that has free online.

There is no doubt the Wii U has the best and most exclusives of the current generation console. The Wii U has a wide variety of exclusives that I can name off the top of my head and anyone person I know would recognize. These exclusives are Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country, Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Super Smash Brothers Wii U. Also to add the upcoming exclusives coming out this year like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Legend of Zelda Wii U, and many more. My personal favourites are Mario Kart 8 for its competitive racing, Super Smash Bros Wii U because it includes all-star Nintendo characters from Wii and Wii U games, and Legend of Zelda Wind waker HD because it has incredible gameplay and top tier graphics.

Probably one of best things about the Wii U is that it has backwards compatibility. This is probably the best perk that both Sony and Microsoft left out when they made the PS4 and Xbox One. This means if you have a Wii U and Wii you are able to play all your old Wii games on the Wii U like Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Series, Punch Out!! Wii, Legend of Zelda titles, and many more. This relieves the hassle of switching between consoles and encourages people to purchase more Wii games. I don’t know about you but I prefer playing all my games for a specific console series on one system saves time for more games. The major advantage the Wii U has over the PS4 and Xbox One is that you can compromise with it. Lets say your brother wants to play his Xbox One game (boo) but you are playing a Wii U game, you can continue playing your game on the Gamepad while he can play his Xbox One game which is pretty cool. This only works with certain Wii U games like Windwaker HD for example.

The biggest thing the Wii U has over the PS4 and Xbox One is that it’s great for families. Many of the popular PS4 and Xbox One titles are all rated M (which means you have to be at least 17 to play) and they don’t have many games that appeal to younger children and parents. With the touch screen gamepad children have a fun and easier time navigating through the Wii U and its features. Many of the Wii U games are kid friendly so parents don’t have to worry about their children learning any swear words or traumatize them being with violence or all that other stuff. As a family you can spend hours playing all Wii U games. If you want to work together as a family play Super Mario 3D World or if your family wants some healthy competition play Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Brother Wii U (warning the competition might get to intense and someone will rage). Speaking of the subject the Wii U also has excellent co-op games that are terrific to play with friends like Smash, Donkey Kong, Super Mario 3D World, and etc… These games have range of 2-8 players (8 players being Super Smash Brothers Wii U).

Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD Gameplay

Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD Gameplay

The most important aspect of the Wii U in my opinion is the experience you get from playing the games. PS4 and Xbox One games are good like Assassin’s Creed Rogue, Infamous Second Son, and Last of Us. But the thing they lack is a sense of using your head when you play these games. When you play PS4 and Xbox One games you feel as if they are making the game too easy by adding pathways and hints to make the game simple and less enjoyable. But with Wii U games it’s completely different, put Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD for instance when I played through the temples I realized they told me next to nothing how to get through certain areas, do puzzles, and even fight bosses like they expected me to solely figure it out for myself. But, that made the game way more enjoyable and a lot more challenging because you have to rely on your instinct and common sense from time to time instead of the game helping you. Also when I see the popular PS4 and Xbox One games I mostly see games that have a lot of blood and gore. They also have a lot of violent games like GTA 5, Call of Duty Advance Warfare, and Assassin’s Creed Unity. Unlike the PS4 and Xbox One the Wii U has popular games of many genres through racing, puzzles, RPGS, and many more.

I put out all the facts for you, so now it’s up to you my readers and fellow bloggers do you think the Wii U is better than the PS4 and Xbox One it’s now time for you to decide. A wise man said this about the Wii U, “If [people] could hold a controller with two hands and hold a tablet or a smartphone with another hand, there would be no issue. Unfortunately, since it is not possible for humans to do that, you can’t play a game in a way you can play with the Wii U.” – Satoru Iwata,
